My microphone isn't working. What can I do?

What’s happening

A2E needs its own permission to use your microphone; allowing it for a website doesn't count. Until it has permission, A2E opens ready for typing instead of listening.

What to do

  1. Press your shortcut on a normal website.

If A2E opens as a text box with a microphone button, it doesn't have permission yet.

  2. Click the microphone button (it says "Turn on microphone" when you point at it).

A2E's microphone page opens in a new tab, and Chrome asks whether A2E can use your microphone.

  3. Allow the microphone in Chrome's prompt.

The page says "Microphone Is On".

  4. If the page says "Microphone Is Blocked" instead, click Open settings.

Chrome's settings for A2E open in a new tab.

  5. Next to Microphone, choose Allow.

Chrome saves the change straight away.

  6. Go back to the page you were on and press your shortcut.

The pill says "Listening". Speak, then press your shortcut again to send.

Still not working?

If A2E says "Could not open a microphone. Check one is connected and selected.", make sure a microphone is plugged in and switched on. Your computer can also block Chrome from the microphone: on Windows, open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone and let apps and desktop apps use it; on a Mac, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and turn on Google Chrome. You can always type instead: press your shortcut, type your question and press Enter.
